Harvesting Dreams

Cultivating a Legacy Through Family and Farm

Melissa Montey-Probost, the hardworking owner of Country Dreams Farm located in Plattsburgh, New York, could have assured you more than four decades ago that she would someday grow up and pursue a career in farming. What set her apart was her desire for a farm that contributed far beyond produce and profits.

“I knew I didn’t want to milk cows or raise animals strictly for food consumption. I wanted a fun way to make a living on a farm.  I was raising three young daughters and this farm crossed my path, then there was no looking back,”  Montey-Probost said.

Country Dreams Farm expands beyond your typical ranch. Pumpkin picking, corn mazes, petting zoos, play areas and tasty apple cider doughnuts are just a few of the amenities offered. The farm also has animals that you can rent for parties or wedding events. Some animals, like the horses, are even available for purchase. Throughout the fall season, the farm also hosts field trips and other activities, such as lantern nights and broomstick decorating. Open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., guests can visit for free May through November.

What makes Country Dreams Farm a perfect fall day destination is the immediate sense of home. This farm was created by a family and continues to run because of their love and commitment. Montey-Probost bought Country Dreams Farm three decades ago. Two of her daughters still work there and she hopes when her grandchildren grow up they will continue the family’s work and traditions. Montey-Probost also thanks a family friend, George Weidle, who “has been a part of this place since the beginning. He dreams up things and from there we roll with it.”

Country Dreams Farm marked its 30th anniversary in 2023, and the Montey-Probost family did not fall short on the celebrations. A party for friends, family and frequent customers was held at the farm with wagon rides, bounce houses and pumpkin painting.

Raising a family as a single mother, as well as running a farm, is not for the unmotivated. Montey-Probost spends her days managing the farm, caring for the animals and extending the feeling of home to the community.

The farm sits on many acres of land, some occupied by activities or animals, but mostly beautiful open scenery. As you step foot onto the property, you are immediately surrounded by crimson, burnt orange, and yellow fall leaves harmonizing with the contrasting dark green grass. You will find that the stressors of life go by the wayside while you are visiting Country Dreams Farm.
