Beer, Food and Music: The Monopole’s Got You Covered

After a Thursday night jumping to music at the Strand’s Jumpin’ in July series, you might still be in the mood to dance. Take the party over to the Monopole. After a Thursday night jumping to music at the Strand’s Jumpin’ in July series, you might still be in the mood to dance. Take the party over to the Monopole.

It’s not the usual club full of flashing neon lights and the body trembling bass. It’s a bar with good (and cheap) beer, maybe a little pub-grub to munch on and some enjoyable music to jam out to — exactly what I want.

The Monopole is one of the few bars in Plattsburgh that regularly features live music. Funky jam bands such as Soul Junction, Tar Iguana and Squid Parade produce a sizable crowd for the Monopole on the weekend. Audience members and bar patrons are friendly, and you never have to worry about stepping on each other’s toes if you’re rocking out to the music, especially during the summer when students have gone home.

The bands perform on a stage that is bar-adjacent, so you never have to walk too far to fill up your glass or pitcher.

If the music gets too loud, that’s OK too. The bands play upstairs, and guess what? There’s a whole other bar downstairs. The downstairs bar offers some craft beers on tap such as Saranac and Dogfish Head. Plenty of TVs line the walls, so it’s the perfect place to go for any game night. Any my favorite part: You can actually hear the person next to you. I love being able to have a drink and a conversation at the same time.

It’s good to note that even though the Monopole is in a college town surrounded by college clubs, it is not one of them. When you come to the Monopole, you’re not just seeing students. You’ll find older faces and a welcoming local crowd.

You need one more thing to make this dive-bar a good experience: greasy fried foods for snacking. The Monopole is famous for its “stoner wings,” chicken wings that have been tossed in every sauce on the menu. That’s hot, medium, bbq, wing ding, bourbon and mantis sauce all one wing. And for 55 cents wings four nights out of the week, who can resist that?

If you want a good tasting beer, the Monopole’s got you covered. If you want awesome chicken wings, the Monopole’s got you covered. If you want to hear amazing live music while still being able to have an audible conversation, the Monopole’s got you covered.
