From Raggedy Ann dolls and Little Lulu books, to wooden dressers and vintage coins, the Antique & Variety Mall welcomes anyone who is curious for nostalgia and hungry for a second-hand treasure. Located in the heart of downtown Plattsburgh, this 36-year-old antique shop is filled with charm, clutter and hundreds of handcrafted, antique and contemporary items that take visitors on a journey from past to present.

Antique & Variety Mall operates as a group shop consisting of 52 vendors who each sell their own items. One-of-a-kind jewelry, vintage clothing, hard-to-find books, vinyl records and antique furniture are just some of the many objects that adorn the walls and fill the many shelves of this shop.

“Seventy percent of the shop is collectible,” owner Steve Brodi says. “And 30 percent of it may be handcrafted, local history or new items.”

This antique shop mimics a mini warehouse. Customers spend hours browsing each section of both the main floor and the basement. Because each vendor sells a unique collection of items, each section appears as a small themed showroom. Vendors upstairs boast an array of 20th-century LIFE magazines, Buffy the Vampire Slayer DVD sets and Ed Hardy shirts, while vendors downstairs sell the likes of historical ceramic figurines, green Depression glassware and porcelain dolls dressed in their Victorian best.

The store not only offers some affordable prices, but also a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Upon entering, customers are greeted by manager Amanda Grant. As a former vendor for about three years, Grant has witnessed the store grow and evolve.

“A lot of the vendors in here thought this was a museum,” Grant says. “I’ve cleaned it up a lot. It’s changed a lot in the past few months.”

While shopping, customers can also learn about the community’s history through both the items and the people. Locals are often eager to talk to visitors about Plattsburgh and its history.

“I like the community,” Grant says. “We’re in a really inviting location. Even if you don’t want to purchase anything, you get a chance to talk to local people and figure out where other shops are, what’s a good place to eat and where’s a good place to hang out.”

Curious bargain shoppers and antique collectors alike can always find something new at Antique & Variety Mall, the “five and dime of the 21st century.”
