The stale smell of books overwhelms as you walk through the door. Jazz melodies and notes bounce around the room looking for ears to please like oxygen looking for lungs to fill. Aisles of shelves create an opportunity for exploration. Corner-Stone Bookshop is a “Choose Your Own Adventure” bookstore that will leave you in a browser’s paradise for hours and this is the way Nancy Daniho wanted to leave the shop.

Since the closing of Borders bookstores nationwide, Corner-Stone Bookshop is the only bookstore left in downtown Plattsburgh. In 2011, Daniho planned to retire after 37 years of owning the quaint bookshop. She did not want to just sell the shop; so she searched for another book lover whom she could pass the business down to. Then, she met Art Graves.
Graves was searching for employment in the North Country after being laid off of his chemist job in a pharmaceutical company, where he worked for 14 years.

“She was looking for a person who loved books,” Graves says. Plattsburgh was looking at life without any bookstores. “I just happened to walk in at the right time.”

The change in management was hardly noticeable. Daniho and Graves’ book collection merged under the same roof at Corner-Stone, where the variety is now richer than ever before. “Over 40 years, you get that variety,” Graves says. And the variety will keep expanding as long as used books need new homes.

For customers’ convenience, Corner-Stone has indexed and organized books of all topics from paperback fiction to Shakespeare to children, making browsing its three-floor inventory easier. Corner-Stone benefits from the lack of a corporate bookstore like Barnes & Noble in that it serves as the literary anchor of the Plattsburgh area. The Corner-Stone Bookshop has a book for everyone’s interests and is waiting for new feet to explore its book stacks.

So before you go to the lake, buy a book for the beach.
